We know that pre-kindergarten is a social innovation with enormous value and return on investment. As pre-K expands across the U.S., a
new study from the University of Chicago explores the impact of new pre-K policies in Chicago Public Schools. The number of elementary schools offering full-day, pre-K has quadrupled, from 10 percent to 41 percent, and access appears more equitable. Most of those new seats are in schools on the West and South Sides of Chicago, in primarily Black neighborhoods and neighborhoods with lower income.

For-profit nursing homes have more COVID-19 infections and deaths per bed than nonprofit facilities, says a
WBEZ analysis of Illinois and federal data. Two different business models; two different levels of staffing and equipment and infection rates. I’m interested in why different business models appear to be correlated with different outcomes. As UChicago health economist Tamara Konetzka points out, staffing is key, and nonprofit facilities have more of it. But nonprofits also tend to turn away the poorest residents who rely on Medicaid, which leaves for-profit facilities with the challenge of caring for lower income residents for less.
