As the social sector works towards creating greater economic opportunity, I am excited to share the UChicago Inclusive Economy Lab (IEL) analysis of OneGoal, which found evidence that the program sharply increases college enrollment and graduation rates for under-resourced low-income students and students of color in Chicago. My IEL colleagues compared more than 7,000 OneGoal Fellows to students from the same communities who had similar academic profiles and who were expected to graduate high school between 2011 and 2020. The collaboration with OneGoal is central to IEL’s research mission to conduct community-informed, partner-driven research that generates trustworthy insights that can inform policy and practice.

SNAP benefits - colloquially known as “food stamps” - are an effective means of reducing food insecurity in the U.S. I was surprised to see that up to 80% of those eligible for SNAP benefits neglect to sign up for renewal, thus cutting themselves off from the benefits of the program. My Chicago Booth colleague Sanjog Misra found that applying the tools of A.I. to algorithmically generate timely, personalized reminder “nudges” boosted SNAP recertification by 20%. I recommend watching this fascinating discussion with Sanjog about how personalized messaging can deliver big benefits not only for social programs, but also for organizations of all kinds.
